Port Adds Security

The Halifax Port Authority has added another level to its security strategy.

About 20 port sites in the authority’s new command and control system will be linked via a 20-kilometre fibre optic network from Halifax telecom firm Internetworking Atlantic Inc.

The network forms the core of an enhanced security infrastructure upgrade announced by the port earlier this year. It will give the authority a secure, high-performance data communications infrastructure.

The authority will use the service to implement an advanced command and control system, featuring cameras, advanced sensors and target-tracking capabilities.

The fibre optic infrastructure will be provided under a multi-year service agreement. Internetworking will supply the optical communications service in partnership with Ultra Electronics of Dartmouth, prime contractor for the $8-million command and control system project. That money is part of $12.5 million the authority received from Ottawa under its marine security contribution program.
